What are Labyrinths?

Some consider Labyrinths to be similar to a maze  - but they are so much more - and, have in fact, been built for thousands of years.  Mazes have paths with many ways in to the center and then one needs to discover the way out.  Whereas, a labyrinth has one way in and one way out.

The Romans constructed indoor labyrinths complete with mosaic tiles.  Churches created labyrinths for pilgrims to walk while they meditated. These were sometimes built indoors as well as in outdoor gardens.

The labyrinth lends itself to meditation and personal reflection and it is very calming to walk its path.  I find it something I like to do annually around the time of my birthday in late August.
