Winter Solstice
What is the winter solstice?
It is actually a favorite time of year for Jewels and Knits - after dealing with the days getting shorter and shorter - we welcome this turning point in the year, when the sun appears to stop moving across the sky and the days begin to get longer again.
Lest we forget, the winter solstice has been celebrated for thousands of years, with ancient peoples celebrating the rebirth of sunlight, with lighting logs and offering gifts. They even built monuments and structures to align with the solstice.
As with many ancient practices, christianity began incorporating the traditions of the winter solstice into a christian message and family celebration. And, today, it is a time for families to celebrate the year that passed and share good wishes for the new year.
