Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere

The winter solstice in the northern hemisphere fell on December 21st this year.  But, did you know it can fall anywhere between the 20th and the 23d? The exact date notwithstanding, it marks the shortest day and longest night of the year, as well as the first day of winter on the astronomical calendar.
